Autonomous cruise controls ( ACC ; also called adaptive browsing controls , radar shipping control , traffic conscious cruise control or dynamic cruise cruise control ) is an optional cruise control system for vehicles that automatically adjust vehicle speed to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Controls are based on sensor information from on-board sensors . (No system uses satellite or roadside infrastructure or cooperative support from other vehicles.) Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) further extends navigation automation using information gathered from fixed infrastructure such as satellite and roadside beacons, or mobile infrastructure such as reflectors or transmitters behind other vehicles.

Such systems may use radar or laser sensors or stereo camera settings that allow the vehicle to brake when it detects a car near another vehicle in the front, then accelerate when traffic allows it.

ACC technology is widely regarded as a key component of every future generation of smart cars. They affect driver safety and comfort as well as increase road capacity by maintaining optimal separation between vehicles and reducing driver error. Vehicles with autonomous cruise control are regarded as autonomous cars Level 1, as defined by SAE International.

Adaptive cruise Control does not provide full autonomy: the system only provides assistance to the driver, but does not move the car by itself.

Europe is the main market for Cruise Adaptative control, by 2016.

Help system

Radar-based ACCs often feature precrash systems, which alert the driver and/or provide brake support if there is a high risk of collision.
