The idiot light, sometimes "send-tale", is an indicator of system damage in motor vehicles by illuminated symbols or legends.
The term "idiot light" comes from popular frustration with the use of lamps by automakers for important functions previously monitored by gauges, so troublesome conditions can be detected and repaired early. Early detection of problems with, for example, engine temperature or oil pressure or charging system operation is not possible through idiot light, which lights up only when an error has occurred - so it does not give advance warning or details about the extent of damage. The Hudson car company was the first to use lights instead of gauges for oil pressure and voltmeter, starting in the mid-1930s.

The automotive puzzle is governed by car security standards around the world. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the Federal Vehicle Safety Standard 101 includes stories in its specifications for vehicle control and display. In Canada, the analogue Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101 applies. In Europe and in most other parts of the world, the ECE Rule determines the different types of stories.

Type
Different stories can convey different types of information. One type of light or flashing to indicate failure (such as oil pressure, engine temperature control, charging current, etc.); illumination and flicker indicate the progress of the warning until an indication of failure. Other types of lights to alert the need for special services after a certain amount of time or distance has passed (for example, to change oil).
Colors can also communicate information about fairy tales, for example red can indicate that a vehicle can not continue driving (eg oil pressure). Many older vehicles use a special scheme for the manufacturer, eg. some British Ford of the 1960s used green for oil pressure warnings, while many other brands of the same era used amber for oil pressure.
Oil pressure
The idiot pressure pressure lamp when the engine oil pressure falls below a predetermined level. Light usually appears when vehicle ignition is turned on, but the engine is not running, because it does not detect the oil pressure because the oil pump is not operating (the oil pump is turned off from the crankshaft, so it only operates while the machine is running)). It usually dies a few seconds after the engine starts up when the oil pump starts working and builds up the oil pressure. This paper can withstand the legend of oil or pictogram of an oil can. Some cars illuminate red or yellow lights, depending on what action needs to be taken.
Machine temperature
Tell-tale engine temperature is usually installed in a single, but more rarely installed in pairs. A pair of lights indicates insufficient engine temperature ( cold , blue) and redundant ( hot , red). One lamp usually only shows overheat conditions in the machine.
Damage indicator (check engine)
In vehicles equipped with OBD-II, the lamp has two stages: illuminates steadily to indicate minor errors such as loose gas cap or damage with vehicle emission control, and flashes repeatedly when severe misfire is detected to alert potential heavy engine drivers or catalyst damage. MIL can present legends, such as check engine , power limited , engine , or service engine immediately ; or can also present a pictogram of a machine.
Charging system
The idiot lamp may indicate that the alternator or the vehicle generator does not charge the battery properly. The battery will then be discarded, turning off the car. Light usually appears when the ignition of the vehicle is turned on, but the machine is not running, because it detects that no power comes from the alternator (the alternator is turned off from the engine so it only produces when the engine is running). This then extinguishes as soon as the engine starts and the alternator starts generating electricity. This light presents a battery pictogram, or presents a legend of amp or batt or genes .
Indicator problem
Some vehicles have one indicator labeled trouble or engine ; this is not Light Engine Check, but the warning light catches all to show a serious enough problem to describe the imminent damage. Early 1980s Ford, like the Crown Victoria LTD, with no instrument option, only has this light, which indicates low oil pressure, overheating problems and carburetion without distinguishing between them. The use of "engine" lights was discontinued in the mid-1980s to prevent confusion with MIL.
Brakes
Many vehicles have red tales to indicate that parking brakes are activated or there is an error in the vehicle's braking system. Tell-tale is in many cases bear the ISO symbol for parking brake and for emergency braking system. In the past, US regulations required this story to withstand the legend of brakes .
Vehicles with anti-lock braking system (ABS) have lights to show detected failures.
Other systems
Dashboard or fairytale indicator lights are provided for turning, high-light, transmission modes on automatic transmission vehicles, and similar devices. It shows the current status and is not an indication of error.
As the car becomes more complex, more dashboard indicator lights have been added for safety and comfort system status. Lights can show many conditions including:
- Low fuel or fuel back - Appears when the vehicle fuel tank is close to empty. Usually shaped like a gas dispenser, or light next to "E" on the fuel gauge, and (mostly newer cars) is a buzzer.
- Glowplugs operate or wait to get started (mostly diesel engines) - Appears when the machine is turned on to show the glow plug of the machine is in operation, and the driver must wait for the light to extinguish before turning on machine. Usually shaped like a circular cable.
- Tighten the driver or passenger seat belt (usu with a bell) - Appears when the engine is turned on and the driver's and/or passenger's seatbelts are not bent. Pressure sensors in passenger seats prevent passenger warning lights from lit when seating is unoccupied. Usually shaped like a person wearing a seat belt.

- Water in fuel (mostly diesel engines)
- The door opens (usu. DOOR AJAR ), or open trunk lid (usu with buzzer)
- Alarm anti-theft/immoblizer engine is active (mostly next cars)

- Automatic transmission error
- Low wind pressure
- Heating/AC system modes (defrost, recirculation, and more)
- Control yacht on (shaped like a meter with an arrow on a needle in most cars)
- Autopilot/Self driving mode is active
