A windsock is a conical textile tube that resembles a giant sock. Windsocks can be used as a basic guide to wind direction and speed, or as decoration.

Usage

Windsocks are used to tell the wind speed and the direction of wind speed itself. Windsocks are typically used at airports to indicate wind direction and strength for pilots and in chemical plants where there is a risk of gas leakage. They are sometimes located along the highway in windy locations.

In many airports, windsocks are lit at night, either by a spotlight above it or above which is mounted on a pole that glows inside.

Function

Wind direction is the opposite of the direction in which the windsock points (note that the wind direction is conventionally determined as the compass point from which the wind comes from, so the windsock pointing north indicates the south wind). Wind speed is indicated by the windsock angle relative to the mounting pole; in low winds, the wind is drooping; in high winds he flew horizontally.

The alternating lines with high orange and white visibility were originally used to help estimate wind speed. Each line adds up to 3 knots to the estimated wind speed. However, some mounting of the circle frame causes the windsocks to be opened at one end, indicating a speed of 3 knots, although the anemometer will not show wind speed. The fully extended windsock shows a wind speed of 15 knots (28 km/h, 17 mph) or greater.

Standard

According to the FAA standards, a well-functioning windsock will adjust to at least 3 knots (5.6 km/h; 3.5 mph) and will be fully extended by 15 knots (28 km/hr; 17 mph).

Per Transport Canada standard: wind 15 knots (28 km/h, 17 mph) will fully extend wind socks, 10-knot wind (19 km/h; 12 mph) will cause wind sock to 5 Â ° below horizontal, wind 6-knot (11 km/h, 6.9 mph) will cause the sock wind to be 30 Â ° below the horizontal.
