Bumper Lips are tools used in Dentistry, especially Orthodontics, for various purposes to repair teeth by preventing pressure from soft tissue. Lip bumpers are usually used in orthodontic treatments where people have maxillary or mandibular teeth in the arch.

Orthodontic
Lip Bumper can be used for the expansion of teeth in the mandible arch. In orthodontics, the difference in the size of the teeth occurs when a crowd is presented. As a treatment, tooth extraction or curvature extension can be done to correct the difference in the size of the tooth. The lip bump is placed in front of the anterior teeth to keep the pressure of the lips and cheeks away from the front teeth and back teeth respectively. As quoted by Werner et al., Lip bumpers can be used to reduce lower anterior crowding, increase curved circumference, and move the distal lower molar teeth distally for the purpose of maintaining anchorage.
Specific changes that occur because of this tool include anterior teeth that extend forward, molar teeth tipping to the back and increasing the width of the arch formed by the lower teeth. The wire is stored from 1.5 to 2.0 mm from the anterior front surface of the tooth. Recently, progress has been made to use Lip Bumper with Mini-Screw to distalize the upper rear gear.
Korn Lip Bumper is a maxillary lip bumper developed by Korn and Shapiro. This lip bumper is made of.040in Stainless Steel wire and involves several loops. This lip bumper sits high in the upper jaw room and 2-3mm from the attached gingiva. This type of bumper is often used with bite plates.

Side Effects
Side effects caused by Bumper Lip include possible disturbances in the 2nd molar eruption pattern in the mandibular arch. Lip pressure on the lip bumpers causes 1 to the distal end of the mole causing the effect and causes the second molar impaction.
Components
The lumar bumper component includes bands on molar teeth, thick Stainless Steel wire with bilateral made loops and acrylic or thick rubber protector that enters the anterior portion of the wire to avoid irritation of the lower lip mucosa.
