Metacresol purple or m -colleze purple , also called m -cresolsulfonphthalein is a dye triarylmethane and pH indicator used in the drug to detect end-tidal carbon dioxide to ensure successful tracheal intubation in an emergency as an indicator in a colorimetric carbon dioxide detector.
In colometric capnography, the indicator is included in the matrix that gives the pH exactly above the indicator color change, it changes color from purple to yellow with CO 2 ; (yellow color is often described as gold) when CO 2 dissolves as CO 2 is acidic.
In chemistry, it has two useful ranges of indicators:
- pH 1,2-2.8: red to yellow
- pH 7.4-9.0: yellow to purple
