Physical harassment is a deliberate act that causes injury or trauma to another person or animal by physical contact. In many cases, children are victims of physical abuse, but adults can also be victims, as in cases of domestic violence or at work. Alternative terms that are sometimes used include physical assaults or physical violence, and may also include sexual harassment. Physical abuse may involve more than one offender, and more than one victim.

Physical abuse means any unintentional act or behavior that results in injury, trauma, or other physical or physical harm. Rude actions against children can often result from parental efforts on child discipline through excessive physical punishment.

Cause

A number of causes of physical abuse against children have been identified, the most common ones which, according to Mash and Wolfe, become:

  • many rude and negligent parents have little exposure to positive parenting models and support.
  • there is often a greater degree of stress in the family environment.
  • Information processing disorders can cause maltreating parents to misinterpret or mislabel their child's behavior, leading to inappropriate responses.
  • there is often a lack of awareness or understanding of expectations that are in line with developments.

Effects

Children who experience physical abuse are at risk for later interpersonal problems involving aggressive behavior, and adolescents are at a much greater risk for substance abuse. In addition, symptoms of depression, emotional stress, and suicidal desires are also common features of people who have been physically abused. The study also showed that children with a history of physical abuse could meet the DSM-IV-TR criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As many as a third of children who experience physical violence are also at risk of becoming rough as adults

Researchers have demonstrated other potential psycho-biological effects of child's physical abuse on parenting, when abused children become adults. Recent findings can, at least in part, be brought forward by epigenetic changes that impact on the regulation of stress physiology. Many other potentially important consequences of childhood physical violence on health and physical development and adolescence and adulthood have been documented through the ACE experience.

Treatment

Seeking treatment is not possible for the majority of people who are physically abused, and those seeking treatment are usually under some form of legal obstacle. Prevention and treatment options for children who experience physical violence include: improving positive experiences early in parent-child relationship development, and changing the way parents teach, discipline, and serve their children.

Evidence-based interventions include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as video-feedback interventions and psychodynamic psychotherapy of older children; all specifically targeting anger and distorted beliefs, and offering training and/or reflection, support, and modeling that focuses on parenting skills and expectations, and enhances empathy for children by encouraging parents to take the child's perspective.

These forms of treatment may include training in social competence and day-to-day demands management in an effort to reduce parental stress, which is a known risk factor for physical violence. Although this treatment and prevention strategy to help children and parents of abused children, some of these methods can also be applied to adults who have been physically abused.
