Histori
In 1890, Lunsford Richardson pharmacist from Selma, North Carolina, took over the drug retail business from his brother-in-law Dr. Joshua Vick, from Greensboro, North Carolina. After Dr. Joshua Vick sees an ad for Vick's Seeds, Lunsford Richardson starts marketing Vick's Family Remedies . The basic ingredients of the range include castor oil, liniment, 'dead shot' vermifuge. The most popular drugs are Croup and Salve Pneumonia, which was first aggravated in 1891, in Greensboro. It was introduced in 1905 under the name Vick's Magic Croup Salve and renamed VapoRub in 1912 at the encouragement of H. Smith Richardson, Lunsford's eldest son; Smith has gained valuable sales and marketing experience while working in New York and Massachusetts after college. Smith Richardson assumed the company president in 1919 after the death of his father.
The flu epidemic of 1918 increased VapoRub's sales from $ 900,000 to $ 2.9 million in just one year. In 1948, Edward Mabry became president of Vicks (the first outside the Richardson family), later known as the Vick Chemical Company . In November 1967, Dale R. Leonard began his career with Vicks Manufacturing Company, Hatboro, Pennsylvania. In 1985, it was sold to Procter & amp; Gamble and Procter & amp; Gamble has since been marketing the product as "The only one stronger than a mother's touch."
Company archives (including personal notes related to the Richardson family) from at least about 1920 or more, until sales in 1985 to Procter & amp; Gamble, housed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
