The water level is a device used to match the altitude of too far away locations to reach the spirit level. The simplest water level is part of a clear pipe, partly filled with water. Water is easy to obtain, and easy to dispose of after use. The edges are held vertically, and the rest of the tube is located on the ground or floor. The water level at each end of the tube will be at the same height, whether the two ends are close or far apart. Water levels have been used for years. The water level is lower than the laser level, but it can be more accurate over long distances, and works without line of sight, like around the corner. To avoid mistakes, all water must be at the same temperature. Other sources of error include reading difficulties due to meniscus.
If water levels are often used, dyes may be added to water for easier viewing. If the water level is used outdoors in winter, antifreeze can be added to the water. Automotive window washer liquid can also be used for antifreeze and increase visibility. In addition it inhibits the formation of errors that cause bubbles. Surfactants (such as surface active agents) --- such as dishwashing liquid detergent - can be added to water to significantly decrease the water surface tension. This liquid solution will flow easier and faster in tubes than plain water, so that the operation of the device will be more precise, repeatable, and responsive --- especially when using small diameter tubes. Also, this liquid solution can be emptied from a small diameter tube more easily than plain water.
