The ICT Development Index ( IDI ) is an index published by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union based on internationally agreed information and communication technology (ICT) indicators. This makes it a valuable tool for measuring the most important indicators for measuring the information society. IDI is a standard tool that governments, operators, development agencies, researchers, and others can use to gauge the digital divide and compare ICT performance within and between countries. The ICT Development Index is based on 11 ICT indicators, grouped into three groups: access, use, and skills.
- The access sub-index captures ICT readiness, and includes five infrastructure and access indicators.
a. fixed phone subscription/100 inhabitants à à à à b. mobile phone subscription/100 inhabitants à à à à c. International internet bandwidth (bits/s) per user à à à à d. percentage of households with computers à à à à e. percentage of households with Internet access
- The usage sub-index captures the intensity of ICT, and includes three ICT intensities and usage indicators.
a. percentage of individuals using the Internet à à à à b. fixed-wired (cable) subscriptions per 100 inhabitants à à à à c. Wireless broadband subscriptions per 100 inhabitants (including satellite, terrestrial mobile and active mobile with minimum download 256 kbit/s)
- The skill sub-index captures ICT capabilities or skills as an indispensable input indicator. It includes three proxy indicators and is given less weight in IDI calculations compared to the other two sub-indices.
a. adult literacy rates (% of population 15 and older who can read and write simple statements with understanding and perform simple arithmetic calculations) Ã Ã Ã Ã b. secondary level of gross enrollment (total enrollment at a certain level of education as a percentage of all eligible) Ã Ã Ã Ã c. tertiary level gross enrollment rate (total enrollment at a certain level of education as a percentage of all eligible)
