Nitrazine or phenaphthazine is a pH indicator dye that is often used in medicine. More sensitive than litmus, nitrazine shows a pH in the range of 4.5 to 7.5. Nitrazine is usually used as a disodium salt.

Use
- This test is done to confirm the fluid nature of the vagina during pregnancy especially when premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is suspected.
- This test involves placing a drop of fluid obtained from the vagina onto a strip of paper containing a Nitrazine dye. Strips change color depending on fluid pH. The strip will turn blue if the pH is greater than 6.0. The blue strip means more likely the membrane has broken.
This test, however, can produce false positives. If the blood goes into the sample or if there is an infection, the pH of the vaginal fluid may be higher than normal. Cement also has a higher pH, so recent vaginal intercourse can result in false readings.
- To perform a fecal pH test to diagnose intestinal infections or other gastrointestinal problems
- In civil engineering, to determine the spread of carbonate in a concrete structure and therefore assess the state of the passive film rebar.
