Rural development is the process of improving the quality of life and economic welfare of people living in rural areas, often relatively isolated and sparsely populated.

Rural development has traditionally centered on the exploitation of intensive natural resources of land such as agriculture and forestry. However, changes in global production networks and increased urbanization have changed the character of rural areas. Increasingly tourism, niche, and leisure producers have replaced resource extraction and agriculture as the dominant economic drivers. The rural community's need for a developmental approach from a broader perspective has created more focus on development goals than creating incentives for agriculture-based businesses or resources. Education, entrepreneurship, physical infrastructure, and social infrastructure all play an important role in developing rural areas. Rural development is also characterized by its emphasis on locally produced economic development strategies. In contrast to urban areas, which have much in common, rural areas are very different from each other. For this reason there are a variety of rural development approaches used globally.

Rural development is a comprehensive term. It basically focuses on actions for the development of areas outside the main urban economic system. we must think of what kind of rural development is needed because the village modernization leads to urbanization and the village environment disappears.

Development action

Rural development measures are intended to promote the social and economic development of rural communities.

Rural development programs are historically top-down from local or regional authorities, regional development agencies, NGOs, national governments or international development organizations. Local people can also bring endogenous initiatives to development. This term is not limited to the problems of developing countries. In fact many developed countries have very active rural development programs.

Rural development aims to find ways to improve rural life with the participation of rural communities themselves, so as to meet the needs of rural communities as needed. Outsiders may not understand the settings, culture, language and other things that are prevalent in the local area. Thus, rural communities themselves must participate in their sustainable rural development. In developing countries like Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, the integrated development approach is being followed up. In this context, many approaches and ideas have been developed and implemented, for example, bottom-up approach, PRA-Participatory Rural Appraisal, RRA-Rapid Rural Appraisal, etc.
