An iridectomy , also known as iridectomy surgery or corectomy , is the surgical removal of part of the iris. This procedure is most often performed in the treatment of closed angle glaucoma and melanoma iris.

Comparison with Nd: YAG laser iridotomy
In the case of acute closed angle glaucoma, surgical iridectomy has been replaced by Nd: YAG laser iridotomy, because the laser procedure is much safer. Opening the world for surgical iridectomy in patients with high intraocular pressure greatly increases the risk of suprachoroidal bleeding, with potential associated expulsive bleeding. Nd: YAG laser iridotomy avoids such havoc by lasers creating holes in the iris, which facilitates the aqueous flow of humor from the posterior to the anterior chamber of the eye.

Current indication
Surgical iridectomy is usually indicated and performed in the following cases:
- Cataract surgery in glaucoma patients
- Combined procedure for cataracts and glaucoma
- Acute closed corner glaucoma
- Posterior capsule tears with loss of vitreous
- Implantation of anterior chamber IOL.
- Vitreoretinal procedure involving silicone oil injection. The location of iridectomy in such cases is at 6'O, compared with routine iridectomy performed at 11 to 1'O. This is because silicone oil is less dense than water.
- Iris trauma
Type
- An antiphogistic iridectomy is the surgical removal of part of the iris to reduce intraocular pressure in conditions of inflammation of the eye.
- A basal iridectomy is an iridectomy that includes an iris root.
- An optical iridectomy is the surgical removal of part of the iris to enlarge the existing pupil, or to form an artificial pupil, when the natural pupil is ineffective.
- A peripheral iridectomy is a surgical removal of part of the iris in its root region, leaving the pupillary margin and the sphincter muscle intact pupillae. It is used in the treatment of glaucoma.
- A preliminary iridectomy , or preparation iridectomy , is a surgical removal of part of a previous cataract extraction iris. This facilitates the removal of cataract lenses.
- A sector iridectomy , also known as complete iridectomy or total iridectomy , is a surgical removal of a complete radial portion of the iris extending from the pupillary margin to the iris root. The key-hole pupil is left by the removal of the iris-shaped wedge.
- A stenopeis iridectomy is a surgical removal of a narrow gap or a small part of the iris, so that the sphincter pupillae muscle remains intact.
- A iridectomy therapy is a partial removal operation of the iris for the cure or prevention of ocular diseases.
