A spica splint is a type of orthopedic splint used to disable the thumb and/or wrist while allowing the freedom of other digits to move. It is used to provide support for thumb injury (ligament instability, sprain or muscle tension), thumb gamekeeper, osteoarthritis, de Quervain syndrome, scaphoid fracture, thumb sprains, postoperative use, and post-removal of hand/thumb removal.

A spica spica consists of metal covered in fabric, which is flexible and can be formed according to the shape and size of the hand. Velcro strips are used to secure and maintain the splint in the hand and help comfortably fit the splint into various hands. Even injuries such as metacarpal fractures and wrist fractures can benefit from spica splints. Thumb Spica splint, Cock-up splint, is used for acute injuries such as sprains and broken bones. Dynamic Cock-up splint is a special type of splint spica, used in hand nerve palsies to prevent contractures and physical therapy.

Thermoplastic splint

There are also spica thumb spikes made with thermoplastic materials. However, the thermoplastic splint is sensitive to heat, such as hot water or prolonged direct sunlight exposure, which may dilute the material.
